What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an internationally recognized certificate that authenticates the origin of a public document. It is issued under the Hague Convention of 1961 and is accepted by all member countries without any further legalization or embassy attestation.
In the United States, apostilles are issued by the Secretary of State of the state where the document was issued or notarized. For example, a Delaware Certificate of Incorporation is apostilled by the Delaware Secretary of State, while a California-notarized document is apostilled by California's Secretary of State.
India has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since July 2005. This means that once a US document carries a valid apostille, it is directly accepted by Indian authorities — banks, courts, registrar offices, the RBI, and FEMA — without needing any separate embassy attestation or consular legalization.
